hire vans and trucks on a car licence

The car driving licence qualifies the operator to drive all cars and light commercials under 3.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight is a manufacturer’s rating for the laden vehicle including the chassis, body, driver and fuel. Many vans and some light trucks will fit this category.

Mitsubishi Fuso produces a range of light trucks which can be driven on the Class B (Car) licence. Body lengths range from about 10’ to over 16’ (3m to 5m). The body length is based on a selection of wheelbases. Box vans, platforms (with or without sides), tippers, fridges, and sign boards are some of the more popular body types available.

Loads which can usually be carried with light trucks include:

  •  Furniture
  •  House contents
  •  Electrical goods
  •  Fabric
  •  Office equipment
  •  Air filtering equipment

Many vehicles used for local door to door, or shop to shop deliveries are commonly under 3.5 tonnes – bread, milk, confectionery, snacks etc. Frequently builders and landscape contractors use 3.5 tonne tippers to collect small quantities and clear the site when the work is finished. There are other benefits in operating a commercial under 3.5 tonnes Gross.

They do not require:

  • Tachoghaph
  • Road speed limiter Haulage licence (even when carrying goods for hire and reward.

Road speed limits: The overall road speed limit for large trucks in Ireland is 80 KPH on all road types. This does not apply to vehicles under 3.5 tonnes GVW. The same rules apply to cars and light commercials: Generally limits are 120k/h on motorways, 100k/h on national roads, 80k/h on other roads. 60 and 50 zones are usually applied in built up areas. Many light trucks are easy to drive for a person only used to cars. A high seating position provides a better view of the road ahead. Large rear view mirrors and panoramic front and side windows make overall visibility better. 3.5 tonnes GVW trucks are available to test drive at www.murphystrucks.ie Light vans and trucks can be hired from www.vanrentals.ie .
